Medieval England: A social history and archaeology from the Conquest to A.D. 1600 Colin Platt, Routledge & Kegan Paul, 1978 Offers an interesting analysis of the use of motte and bailey castles across Britain. Our drawing of the how the Twmpath might have looked was partly inspired by pictures in this book. |

The Medieval Castle. Life in a Fortress in Peace and War Philip Warner, Penguin, 2001 If you thought the peacetime castle was the stage for courtly love, stately banquets, and considerable boredom, think again. The castle, says Warner, was part ordnance factory, part barrack square, part proving ground; and at least as noisy as a modern factory. This fascinating book also contains a good section on motte and bailey castles. |
